Dear Parents and Guardians,
Hankins wants to emphasize the importance of continued learning over the summer, especially when it comes to reading. Studies consistently show that students who read regularly during the summer maintain and even improve their literacy skills, while those who do not often experience what is commonly known as the “summer slide.”
To support your child’s academic growth and encourage a love of reading, Katherine Hankins Middle School is excited to share our grade-level summer reading selections for the 2025-26 school year:
• Incoming 6th Grade: The Giver by Lois Lowry
• Incoming 7th Grade: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
• Incoming 8th Grade: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
Each novel has been thoughtfully selected to engage students, build reading stamina, and introduce themes that will be revisited during the school year. These high-interest texts encourage critical thinking, empathy, and meaningful discussion in the Language Arts classroom. Incentives will be provided for students who read and complete the summer assignment.
Summer Reading Requirements
• All students are expected to read the assigned novel for their upcoming grade level.
• In addition to reading, students will complete activities from the provided Summer Reading Choice Board.
• Completed summer reading work will be submitted to students’ Language Arts teachers within the first two weeks of the 2026–2027 school year.
The choice board offers a variety of creative and critical-thinking options, allowing students to demonstrate comprehension through writing, art, and real-world connections. This flexible structure ensures every student can engage with the text in a meaningful way.
We truly appreciate your support in helping your child continue to grow as a reader throughout the summer. Encouraging regular reading time, discussing the book together, and checking progress on the assignment can make a wonderful difference.
If you have any questions or need assistance accessing a copy of the book or the choice board, please feel free to reach out to the school.
Wishing you and your family a safe, restful, and enriching summer!
